Moving to Singapore? Some really useful advice

Although Singapore’s main language is english, you will often hear a mix of mandarin, hokkien (dialect), malay and singlish (Singapore English).

To those who are trying to figure out what your local colleagues are gossiping about at the pantry … here’s some singlish 101

1. Act blur – play innocent
2. Alamak – Malay expression of dismay, surprise or alarm
3. Balik Kampung – Malay for “return to the village”. Used in the sense of  “get lost”
4. Beh Tahan – can’t stand it
5. Blanjah – means to give someone a treat
6. Boh Chup – nonchalant
7. Cham Siong – negotiate or come to an agreement
8. Chop chop – quickly, in a hurry
9. Die die – go all out, with no possibility of non-compliance
10. Eh sai bo? – possible? can or not?
