PHOTO OF THE WEEK – FULLERTON HOTEL & CBD BUILDINGS

Originally named Fullerton Building, named after Robert Fullerton (Governor of Singapore from 1826 to 1830).

The building was constructed during the period of 1925-1928. The first occupants were the Exchange, the Chamber of Commerce and the Singapore Club.

In 1942, various Government departments were housed in the building and it was then used as a hospital just before the British surrender to the Japanese in 1942.

The Income Tax Department (starting late 1948), Ministry of Finance and Economic Development Board later occupied the building, and the General Post Office was its last occupant until March1996 before it was converted into the current Fullerton Hotel by Sino Land (Hong Kong arm of Far East Organisation) in 1997-2000.
